Hyundai Motors will face Toyota head-on in the US emerging as a major global battleground for the world's leading hydrogen-powered electric cars. Toyota has risen as a new leader in hydrogen-fueled electric cars. As hydrogen filling stations are rapidly being installed in the US, it is highly likely that a company that will preempt the US market will gain a supremacy over the global hydrogen car market in the future.

According to industry sources, Hyundai Motor plans to launch the next-generation hydrogen electric car 'Nexo' in Korea first in March and to sequentially launch it in Europe and the US. The annual production goal set by Hyundai Motor is around 3680 units. The car is expected to compete with the Toyota Mirai, which currently ranks first in hydrogen electric vehicle sales in the US.

So which is better? In an ideally developed world, hydrogen and electric propulsion will be on a fairly level playing field. Though at present many swear by electrification as the future, it relies heavily on all our other energy sources being green to truly earn its zero-emission tag. Hydrogen fuel cells are currently in their infancy by comparison. However, the signs are clear that hydrogen poses a far greener alternative out of the box. Once the issue of supply infrastructure is sufficiently sorted, the convenience of a five-minute fill up at a fuelling station is a notion that makes a compelling argument for hydrogen.
It boasts all the benefits of a combustion engine and an electric drivetrain, but with none of the downsides of either – if manufacturers are willing to develop it, hydrogen may well be the future of mobility.

Aksjer bytter hender , aksjen hadde fin flyt på morgenkvisten i går , men plutselig ble selgersiden større enn kjøper . Det er fortsatt selgervillige aksjeeiere men det står heldigvis plenty med kjøpere klare som hamstrer aksjer som selges på tilbud .

Hei alle sammen.

Det er en grunn til at vi er i risikable enkeltaksjer.
Vi er her fordi mulighetene til å gjøre et stort kupp på sikt er overveiende god.
NEL har høy risk/reward, og det vet alle, eller burde vite det.
Personlig har jeg tatt et valg, og tåler å tape hvert øre, men det gjør jeg ikke fordi jeg vil selge lenge før aksjen står i null hvis jeg har mistanke om at selskapet ikke vil lykkes.
Hittil er jeg overbevist om det motsatte, at selskapet vil lykkes, og at jeg vil gjøre en kule her, men jeg er også som tidligere nevnt flere ganger her, langsiktig.

Boreal Sjø og Wärtsilä Ship Design har inngått ein samarbeidsavtale om å utvikla ei hydrogendriven ferje til sambandet Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik.

Ferjesambandet blir den aller første i verda der fartøyet skal nytta hydrogen som drivstoff.

I statsbudsjettet har Statens vegvesen fått i oppdrag å lysa ut ein utviklingskontrakt for ei hydrogendrive ferje, som skal setjast i drift i 2021. Ferjesambandet vil bli operert av to ferjer, der den eine skal vera full-elektrisk, og den andre hybrid hydrogen-elektrisk med 50 prosent av fremdrifta frå hydrogen, melder Wärtsilä.

Automakers call for more support for clean vehicles

GM and Toyota are urging the federal government to support infrastructure projects
Major automakers have begun suggesting that the United States Congress should be investing more in the development of the infrastructure needed to support clean vehicles. Late last week, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing at the Washington Auto Show. At the hearing, General Motors and Toyota both called for an increase in federal funding that would be used to build new electric charging and hydrogen fuel stations. These stations are needed in order for clean vehicles of various kinds to become successful in the country.

Toyota asks for more funding for hydrogen stations
Toyota is also calling for more funding for infrastructure projects, though it is more focused on hydrogen fuel. The automaker is among the first to commercialize a hydrogen-powered vehicle. To date, more than 3,000 of the automaker’s fuel cell vehicles have been sold in California alone. The problem, however, is that there are even fewer hydrogen stations than charging stations. Toyota is urging the federal government to commit more funds to the development of new hydrogen stations. These stations are needed to support the forthcoming fuel cell vehicles that most major automakers plan to release.

Toyota joins Hydrogen Mobiliy Australia as founding member

Toyota Australia has joined forces with industry heavyweights to accelerate the reality of a hydrogen (H2) society built upon clean and renewable energy technology.

The automotive manufacturer has become a foundation member of Hydrogen Mobility Australia (HMA), which has been established to support the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. HMA will foster industry and government advocacy, research, education and industry engagement programme promoting the benefits of fuel cell technology.

Toyota’s Vice-President of Product and Corporate Operations, Mike Rausa, said HMA regarded H2 as a fuel of the future for supplying the clean energy needs of Australia, including for vehicles.

California Governor Jerry Brown wants 5 million zero-emission vehicles on state roads by 2030. By the end of next month, one of them will be shuffling around the ports of SoCal.

Hydrogen-Norge samlet: – Rart at ingen fra regjeringen møter opp på en slik konferanse

Denne uken ble konferansen Norsk hydrogensymposium gjennomført i Tyssedal utenfor Odda, og på programmet sto en rekke norske hydrogenprosjekter, både i industriell og offentlig regi.

Foruten hydrogen innen veitransport ble blant annet maritime prosjekter, erstatning av kull i industrien, og hydrogenets plass i det grønne skiftet diskutert.

Mange norske aktører innen hydrogen var samlet her for å utveksle erfaringer.

Men Nils Johan Ystanes, som sitter i arrangørkomiteen og er HR- og kommunikasjonsannsvarlig ved Tizir, undrer seg over hvorfor ingen ministere fra regjeringen, eller andre rikspolitikere tok seg bryet med å ta turen til konferansen.

The surplus electricity from solar and wind power gives hydrogen the chance to replace oil and gas.
Hydrogen is the least talked-about renewable energy but has the greatest potential to replace fossil fuels, both to heat homes and to provide fuel for road transport.

The possibility of using hydrogen has been known about for generations, but only in the last two years has it become both practical and financially viable to see it as a large-scale competitor to both gas and oil. This new fuel cell could turbocharge renewable power

Fuel cells are far greener than gas-powered engines because they produce electricity without burning up the hydrogen (or other fuel) that powers them. But they’re often impractical on a commercial scale because they’re so much more expensive to make. Now, researchers report that by creating a fuel cell that can run at a midrange temperature, they’ve made an inexpensive, powerful version that could boost the prospects for plentiful green energy.

Most fuel cells run at temperatures too hot or too cool to make at a reasonable price. One class, the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) cells that power cars and buses, run at about 100°C. Another class, the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that power backup generators for hospitals and other buildings, typically run at 1000°C. The lower temperature of PEM cells makes the essential chemical reactions sluggish, requiring the use of expensive metal catalysts, such as platinum, to speed them up. But the feverish temperatures of SOFCs means that even if they don’t need the pricy catalysts, they need to be built from expensive metal alloys that can handle the scorching operating temperatures.

So in recent years, fuel cell researchers have pursued a Goldilocks strategy, looking for midrange temperature fuel cells that operate at about 500°C. That’s warm enough for reactions to proceed quickly, but cool enough to allow them to be built from cheaper metals, such as stainless steel. Initially, scientists tried doing so with catalysts borrowed from SOFCs. The devices worked, but they generated just 200 milliwatts of power per square centimeter (mW/cm2) of electrode surface area, well behind the performance of PEM fuel cells and SOFCs. To make it commercially, such fuel cells would need to produce at least 500 mW/cm2, according to the U.S. Department of Energy .
Two teams have gotten close. One group, led by Ryan O’Hayre, a materials scientist at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, reported last year in Science that it had produced an intermediate temperature fuel cell capable of producing 455 mW/cm2. Another group, led by Ji-Won Son, a materials chemist with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology in Seoul, reported last year in Nature Communications that it got a similar result at the ideal operating temperature of 500°C.

Now, a group led by Sossina Haile, a chemical engineer at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, has crossed the goal line. Haile and her colleagues figured out that one key problem was occurring as soon as the reaction started. Both PEM fuel cells and SOFCs, like batteries, have two electrodes separated by an ion-conducting electrolyte. At one electrode, fuel molecules are broken apart and stripped of negatively charged electrons, which pass through an external circuit to a second electrode. Meanwhile, positively charged ions ripped from the fuel molecules travel through the electrolyte to the second electrode where they recombine with the traveling electrons.

Haile discovered that the connection point between the first electrode—called an anode—and the electrolyte was weak, blocking protons from zipping through to the second electrode, or cathode. So Haile and colleagues added a thin but dense layer of catalyst material atop the bulk of their anode catalyst, creating an easier transition for protons to move into the electrolyte. The researchers also tweaked the composition of their ceramic electrodes to make them more stable in the presence of steam and carbon dioxide. As they report today in Nature Energy their devices produced nearly 550 mW/cm2 at 500°C. They were stable for hundreds of hours of operation with few signs of degradation.

O’Hayre says the new work is “a great contribution,” and calls the performance “impressive.” But he notes that there are still a few issues that need to be solved before these devices are ready for market. For starters, the current cells are small, just a few centimeters in diameter. Researchers would need to find a way to make much larger versions, which could be tricky. That’s because the dense coating on the anode was formed by a technique called pulsed laser deposition, which is difficult to do large-scale on a commercial assembly line.

Another challenge, adds David Tew, a program manager at DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy in Washington, D.C., is that the all-ceramic electrodes and electrolyte are extremely brittle, which could make them less durable for use in real-world conditions.

Haile doesn’t disagree with those concerns. But she says her team’s advance should encourage researchers to solve those problems. If they do, intermediate range fuel cells could transform renewable energy, because they can also be used to convert electricity—say from a wind turbine—into hydrogen and other fuels for storage, and later turn them back into electricity. That would solve renewable energy’s biggest challenge: storing energy when the sun isn’t shining and the wind is still. That’s a combination that even Goldilocks might say could be just right for the future of fuel cells.
